Palin Family Values: Thoughts From A Confused Conservative

This is a strange time to be a Republican. Am I just supposed to be cool with all this? Should I now recalibrate my family values to adjust for this unfortunate mess? Is teen pregnancy now just a sign of “An American Family?” Is the desire to secede from the United States now a sign of patriotism? What the hell is going on here?

First of all, I don’t want to hear from anyone that “Sarah Palin’s family should be off limits”. This isn’t about Bristol Palin or Trig Palin or Earwax Palin or Mack Truck or whatever the hell the other ones are called. This is about the judgement, the beliefs and the managerial style of the woman who could be President of the United States. I see no reason to be polite. I think Palin’s decision to drag her daughter’s teen pregnancy into the international spotlight is not just ill-considered, it is morally bankrupt.

And the story just gets creepier by the minute. So Bristol wasn’t pregnant last winter, but she is NOW? Did she get knocked up while she had mono? Was her mother so irresponsible that her daughter was having unprotected sex while bedridden with an infectious disease? Does this dude, who proclaimed not only that he doesn’t want kids but “Ya f – - – with me I’ll kick [your] ass”…really want to marry her? Are these the kinds of marriages that are supposed to build strong families? My head is spinning.

I’m a Republican because this party supports my beliefs: personal accountability, family values, country first. But now that same party is telling me that while those things are still important, they don’t mean what I thought they meant.

We are being mocked the world over. Our pundits are being laughed off every major news network for their inability to make a clear argument in favor of this decision. Can you blame the poor bastards? YOU go out and explain why Sarah Palin is the most qualified Republican for the job. (And no, you can’t say it’s because she sold a state government plane on EBay.)

I never thought I’d say it, but my vote is on the line. This choice is not aging like a fine wine, it’s molding like sour cream in the sun. DROP SARAH PALIN NOW. Send her back to Alaska and reclaim our values as conservatives and as Christians. A family is made up of a man and a woman who love each other, not a teenage girl and a douchebag, one of whom thinks she’s in love because she’s a child and the other who doesn’t give a rat’s ass because he only wants to ” hang out with the boys, do some fishing, shoot some s- – - and just f – - -in’ chill I guess.” The fact that this poor girl has been forced by her mother to eschew birth control and then “take responsibility for the consequences” is not good parenting. It’s child abuse.

Sorry if that sounds harsh, but I love my country and my party, and both are swirling down the toilet in front of my eyes. John McCain, I’m giving you a do-over. Call Kay Bailey Hutchinson. Call Elizabeth Dole. Hell, call Olympia Snowe. But run from these rednecks like the plague. If we keep walking this path, the next State of the Union will involve a joint session of Congress screaming “Jer-ry! Jer-ry!”

This nightmare has to end.

  • I agree…

Sarah may be able to take her baby to work with her and nurse during a meeting as Governor of Alaska – a state with a population of 626,000 people. It is a different story being the VP of the United States. No CEO in any corporation would do such a thing. I think a woman with children is certainly capable of being the VP or president of the US, but I do question the judgment and “family first” priority of a new mother with a newborn having special needs.

When it comes down to it, where will her allegiance be? With the MILLIONS of people relying upon her to lead the country, or with her children, whether they be pregnant, sick or whatever the issue? Will she be in the Middle East brokering a peace deal and suddenly have to fly home to attend to the health care needs of her infant son? She would be a cruel, heartless mother if she did no less, but she will be an ineffective, laughable joke of a world leader if she places her family priorities ahead of her country.

  • Just for the record, I disagree with that first comment. The fact that she’s a mother with a young child has nothing to do with her ability to lead. That’s not a part of my argument and shouldn’t be a part of anyone’s.

  • I’m glad to see there exist some McCain supporters who are still able to see reason. The Palin pick is indefensible on so many levels. Not only is she a shining model of hypocrisy, but by moving his ticket farther to the right McCain is essentially conceding Independents to Obama. McCain cannot afford to concede these Independents without a fight. It’s a losing strategy.

When I watch the McCain campaign spokesman field questions about the now defunct experience argument, I want to laugh; McCain cut off his most effective line of attack against Obama and gave Obama’s campaign the very weapon they will crucify him upon. Poor judgement and incompetence do not begin to describe McCain’s choice of Palin as his running mate.

  • Thank you for a plainly honest reaction. It is very refreshing.

I think you will see her step down to attend to ‘family issues’ and the people that took offense not just about this but her:

    crony relations with ted stevens
    her Alaska first secessionist positions
her blood lust for unsporting airplane wolf hunts
her dominionist position – are we not a pluralist society?
her lying about her relationship to the bridge to nowhere kerfuffle.

and of course the libruls will be blamed for putting so much stress on the lady in question…who would be President.

I hope you give a serious consideration to the only serious candidate, Barack Obama.

Again – Thank you for expressing your dismay. We are as shocked as you are.

    America deserves better.

  • Do we live in some sort of parallel universe, where the Delegates whooping it up in Minneapolis experience a whole other take on all this, from the one so many others seem to have? I read this young man’s MySpace page, before it was removed from view, and I am seriously shocked. And those pics and captions from his sister (?) Merced (?)- say what? I wouldn’t dream of letting a daughter of mine marry this self-announced “F-in’ Redneck” with his “I’ll beat ‘em all up” fantasies of his, let alone insist upon it. SP’s own Press Secretary didn’t know about Bristol’s (current) pregnancy on Sat.- how could McCain’s people have??? I just really resent being lied to in such obvious ways yet again, and from a source never expected. I no longer trust McCain- period.

  • This gives us great insight into how the goverment will be ran if the McCain Palin ticket gets in. Lets not forget the “Abuse of power” and “Loyalty letter” issue. I think we Americans have ALL suffered enough from “Abuse of power” and lack of proper investigations and intense cover up.

  • It’s a big deal for the same reason John Edwards lying about his affair is a big deal. You cannot hold yourself up as some higher moral standard and then proclaim family members off limits when they demonstrate how bad those choices work out.

  • You libs are so typical. Give me a freakin’ break.

If you guys (and the so called “press”) had vetted Obama to the degree Palin’s being scrutinized by the media and the nutroots, you’d have been in Hillary’s camp long ago. At the very least, please try to come up with some facts about Palin that are supported by … well, facts (or at the very least, by something other that DailyKRASS).

As for her record, Palin’s actually run something: She’s a chief executive who has fought corruption, while Obama has luxuriated in it.

How else does someone—besides Hillary—who has accomplished so little become the top of the ticket for his party?

To put a finer point on it … Besides playing community organizer, writing two glowing autobiographies, and spending most of his time in the Senate running for president, what has Obama accomplished? What significant legislative achievement can you point to?

Listen along with me as the crickets chirp …

Palin has actually fought corruption (read: Murkowski and Stevens) and won. And, she lives her values. Her daughter had the child. It happens.

Maybe if she’d terminated the pregnancy and it’d gone unnoticed, you’d be happy. Another life snuffed out. No big deal, right? If it’d been up to BHO, that child would have been terminated, so that we wouldn’t “saddle (an irresponsible teenager) with a baby.” But, her daughter is taking on that responsibility. I laud her parents.

How many like her have been to the clinic several times so they wouldn’t be so “saddled?” They certainly don’t mind the thrill, but please don’t hold them accountable.

But, that’s our society in a nutshell right? Give me my rights, but don’t bore me with the responsibilities.

Of course, all of these issues are above Obama’s pay grade, right? No protection for those who can’t protect themselves, except, of course, the Tony Rezkos, the Bruce Ayers’, and their ilk.

As for this blog’s host … If you’re so easily swayed by the lib media regarding Palin’s background, please go. And do so quickly.

We all know how distinctive a blog “Black Men for Obama” will be.

  • I was told of this site by a friend who is black when I asked if she had felt any animosity for her decision to vote for John McCain, and she said she wasn’t alone. She told me that Obama shouldn’t have a monopoly on a race of people. She likes what John McCain stands for, and what is more, she likes what Governor Palin stands for.

Imagine that you are her. She is tired of seeing the way the government is being run and instead of complaining or starting a blog she does something about it and runs for office. People appreciates what she is doing and she rises through the ranks. Not on the paycheck of KNOWN TERRORISTS or Corrupt politicians, instead she takes them on. Tired of the corruption in her State she steps up and takes on the big boys.

Then, her daughter comes to her one day and says, “Mom I am pregnant and I am keeping the baby.” What would you do? Do you embrace her and tell her that she will have to grow up and sacrifice and remain accountable for her decision to have sex before marriage, but that you are proud of her decision to respect the life she has been blessed with and that you are there for her unconditionally. Or, do you shun her and make her regret her decision to keep this child alive. A few months later you are asked to be the vice presidential nominee. You tell your family and she tells you she doesn’t want her decisions and situation to cost you the opportunity to do for the country what you know you can.

I have read this blog and would have to say that you talk a great deal about your Christian values, but you use profanity frequently and have been quite quick to judge and demean in a wholey unchristian way. You made the John Edwards situation personal, and while he has clearly sinned can you honestly say that your sins are less offensive to God? No. Hypocricy would have been if John McCain or Governor Palin decided now to pull her off the ticket becuase of this and that poor girl was made to feel shame for making the right choice. Also, shame on you for buying into and spreading the MSM lies about Trig. You have no idea what this woman has been through and you just pile it on.
Do a little examination of you own faith before you start calling others morally bankrupt. I do not plan on returning to this site.

  • People appreciate what she is doing and she rises through the ranks

  • If you do some research on Palin’s 6 year tenure as mayor of Wasilla you will see some very disturbing news.

Upon taking office, the first thing Palin did was write a letter to the town’s administrators asking each one of them to resign as a test of loyalty. Fast forward 6 years. She had increased taxes on local resisdents, decreased taxes on business, recieved $27million in earmarks, implemented an unprecedented expansion of Wasilla’s government, and put the town -$20million in debt (she inherited a debt free Wasilla). Not to mention, Palin ordered a public complex built on private property, which she then tried to take by eminent domain (after its construction), failed, and Wasilla wound up paying 10x market value for it. You can dig up all sorts of dirt on Palin in a couple hours.

  • Red,

How ’bout a little sourcing please. You can find all sorts of “dirt” on anyone. Much of it’s made up.

And, have you done the same “research” on Obama?

    Just asking …

  • I believe you are not really a Black man, or a Christian, or for McCain. Nothing makes sense on your blog. You say you are a Christian, then you curse and curse about Bristol Palin. I am for Obama and I think most people will think you are really batting for Obama — but that you are using dirty Republican tactics to get at McCain. This reflects poorly on Obama’s campaign. So what are you?

  • This Republican is not voting. Although I’m Prolife I think it’s not the most important issue at this moment in time. If another 9/11 were to hit and she were President no one objective would say that she’s prepared to know how to act without massive advice from advisers. I want a decider like Bush not a “Can I get a little help over here” president.

It’s now clear that my base forced McCain to pick a prolifer and McCain thought he could kill two birds with one stone by choosing a female prolifer. The prolifers knew nothing about her before they were all over the radio and TV talking about how perfect she was for the VP slot. I wanted to know more and now that I do I’m sitting this one out. Being a female and Prolife ended up solving one of the goals McCain set out to achieve by selecting her and heck there are a lot more issues she will face then judge appointments. Palin and simple McCain met her once found out she was prolife and selected her. I’ll watch tonight but I can’t think of anything she will say to convince me that she could handle a 9/11 type attack.

  • Nosir – I apologize for the swearing. I need to work on that. You are wrong about me not being black, Christian or for McCain, but you are right that my blog has a lot of contradictions. A lot has happened over the past month since I began writing this. Many have pointed out ways that my thinking has been unfair, and I have tried to take that criticism to heart and even, yes, change my mind on a few things. This doesn’t mean that I’m secretly pulling for Obama. But I’d be lying if I said that the events of the past few weeks, the new ideas I’ve been subjected to (and a personal tragedy that I won’t discuss here) have made me question whether the Republican Party is really the one out there fighting for the things I believe in. I have not seen my values embodied in their recent actions–only their words, and words fail to impress me anymore. I may be full of contradictions, but I’m going to continue to speak my mind, even if it doesn’t make sense. And I really will try to work on the swearing.

  • Great an op-ed piece disguised as news … Andrew Sullivan and the Atlantic Monthly. Have anything substantive from someone reliable?

Maybe someone who’s done similar work investigating Barack Obama? No?

    Keep grasping …

  • ThePoliticalTruth

    To Really?

Do you like to live in fantasy? Sarah Palin found a way to say she fights government waste when in fact Citizens Against Government Waste rate Alaska as the number one Pork Barrel state. You are being hoodwinked into thinking Sarah Palin is a great reformer. The selling of the state plane – this is greatly over hyped. That is like saying I am a great baseball player by having a perfect record in little league.

Facts are she left her mayoral town Wallisa with -22 million in debt. We need Republicans who are fiscal responsible and Sarah Palin is not it. Plus you are ready to vote for someone you know for less than 1 week who will be responsible for your well being in America?

We need more time to find out the political truth
and then we can get back to reality.

  • [...] Booker Rising from the Black Men for McCain blog. Emphasis mine. “This is a strange time to be a Republican. Am I just supposed to be [...]

  • I agree completely. But I said so on my personal LJ a couple of days ago, and all my female Republican friends got really mad at me. I don’t know if they want someone in our party to “prove” that women really can have it all, or if they just approach politics the way people approach sports teams, cheering for their own side just because it’s theirs.

    (Here via http://bookerrising.blogspot.com/.)

  • Wow. I truly hope this site is really Black Man For Obama.
I could go on, but I think your post has adequately reflected your deprogamming kicking in.

  • You called the mother irresponsible that her daughter got pregnant >?Uhm… something is wrong with that statement. Big time! Re read what you wrote. You are either very young, no children, and obviously easily influence. Why are you and many others shock by McCain’s choice of Vice President. He is giving the democrats just the kind of person they would want with some exceptions. Now they are judging her instead of their own twisted irmoral views. Young man think for yourself. This is the real world.

  • Lay off the family like Barackand Obiden said, love how they are acting now, smart moves. What is really bothering most of you about Sarah and her daughter who by the way is not running for president, Huh? Do you know are have know any young girls with promising futures who have gotten pregnant?

  • [...] Black Republican Awakening?: ”Black Men for McCain” are confused: “This is a strange time to be a [...]

  • For those that don’t think that Governor Palin is “responsible” for her teenage daughter being pregnant, think about how the GOP has villainized black teenage unwed mothers. Those ladies don’t get to stand up on stage at a national convention to a round of applause.

I’m black. And a Democrat. I harbor no illusions about the party’s history. However, you can’t trot out Cowboy Troy or Brian McKnight and get votes from the black community wholesale—yes, even the “desirable” ones.

I also believe in personal accountability, but if the GOP and its evangelicals are going to throw stones at the black community, in particular, for the teenage pregnancy problem, they can’t give Bristol Palin a pass and ball-ride her mother for being a great parents.

The “oops, it happens” excuse is beneath the lofty ideals that the GOP and some of the posters bashing the writer of this blog.

I think some of you people are rank hypocrites, and you need to have your head examined if you think that a young, white unwed mother who was a minor child when she got pregnant is any better than a young, black unwed mother who did the same thing.

Why does Bristol Palin get the full support of the GOP? I am glad her family supports her and her beau. Truly am. But if Governor Palin wants to advocate for teenage unwed mothers, she’ll need to advocate for ALL of them. I challenge her to do that as well as advocate for the parents of special needs children. The plank on teenage unwed mothers was conspicuously absent from the crap speech she gave.

I don’t want Obama and Biden to call her on the teenage unwed mothers advocacy. I want the “right-minded” people to do it. This is YOUR mess. Clean it up.

  • I would have been happy to forget all about Bristol Palin, her pregnancy and the all-too-typical guy (bellicose small town jock athlete) who knocked her up. Although the timing (did they really have sex while she was sick with mono?) raises the squick factor, it still would have been none of our business.

Until the Republicans chose to elevate her — and by extension, her parents — to near-sainthood for choosing to have the baby.

Until they chose to fly Levi down to St. Paul, shave him, put a suit on him and trot him out as Bristol’s husband-to-be. While yanking his MySpace page (where all the profanity-filled quotes in the original post came from).

Call it for what it is — a old-fashioned shotgun marriage foisted on two young people being cynically used as props to establish Sarah Palin’s bonafides as a social conservative.

Of course, choosing to have a baby is easy when you’re the daughter of a governor, with total access to neonatal care, shelter, food, transportation, family support and automatic acceptance into any college in Alaska (or one of the many Christian schools in the lower 48).

I’m sure that young Levi will never want for a job — although he may want to skip being an Alaska State Trooper, on the off-chance he and Bristol ever get divorced.

ANYWAY…I am sure Gov. Palin will survive this, and win or lose she’ll be a force in national politics for years to come. I wonder if the African-American conservative community is ready to support Sarah Palin when she runs for President in 2016 (or 2012 if McCain loses)…

  • Was the GOP against black teenage moms or teenage mothers, period?

Sarah Palin interview where all these questions will be address will come, I’m sure. No, a parent is not the reason why a child gets pregnant. Come on!

I agree I hope she does advocatesfor all teenage moms. However, she must speak the truth about women having children out of wedlock. Wait a minute, celebrities do it all the time. Is anything wrong with that?

  • @ You Ask,
Thank you for an honest answer because, to be honest, normally when I ask that question, Republicans unload.
The black welfare queen, the black teenage unwed mother, etc. are generally used as scapegoats for the right to use against the Democrats in a similar fashion that Willie Horton was.
Some of us on here are black discussing this situation with Sarah Palin. As a black person who has watched black women’s morals assailed on the teen pregnancy issue and the absentee father issue, it seems to me that movies like “Knocked Up” and “Juno” that feature attractive, fun, likeable white women as unwed mothers (one of them a minor) send the wrong message. Now, we’re all aware that Oprah was a teen mother (the baby died, I believe) as well as Solange Knowles.
But you have to admit that “Knocked Up,” “Juno,” Britney Spears, Jamie Lynn-Spears and Ashlee Simpson and then Bristol Palin are quite an interesting sight to behold. Factor in the Paris Hilton sex tape of her fornicating, fellating and receiving oral sex, and you’ve got a VERY interesting view into what the Abercrombie and Fitch set are watching on television in the movies the last few years. It’s just as bad as Nelly’s “Tip Drill” video and just as damaging as “makin’ it rain” or “droppin’ it like it’s hot.”
And I think white folks are starting to learn a hard hard lesson (no pun intended for the young ladies,) it’s one thing to see that black video vixen shaking her rump in a Lil’ Jon video, after all: she’s nasty and has no morals, but it’s a whole ‘nother ballgame to see your little blonde-haired girl droppin’ it like it’s hot, so you take the hip-hop music off her iPod, only to see these gals from good homes shakin’ it on youtube for free and allowing their face to be seen while doing it on the internet for all to see.
The fact that Bristol Palin found the time to lay down and have sex with her boyfriend should tell the religious right that, even though they wave their fingers at black folks for being bad parents, they’ve got some work of their own to do. And they can’t blame hip-hop for that. The way they tell it, they don’t listen to the lyrics because they are too violent and misogynistic, so if they and the kids aren’t listening to it, why do we see their daughter’s boyshorts crammed where the sun don’t shine on youtube?
Don’t believe me? Go on youtube and google “booty.” You’ll be amazed at how many prepubescent girls are on there shakin’ their badonkadonk for free.

  • You are making the mistake of basing too much judgement on Palin’s family troubles. So what if she has a wayward kid and dumb boyfriend? If you dig deep enough into most families in America there is a lot of personal dirty laundry that can be uncovered. Most of it is irrelevant to the task at hand, winning elections. Bush’s duaghters sometimes drink too much. This is a reason he should or should not be elected? If so, how come Ted Kennedy is still a Senator?

So what if her daughter is wayward? You think Dick Cheney is thrilled by his lesbo daughter? He has to live with it, like every parent lives with their disapointments, and then move on. And do you think Palin;s daughter’s life is defined by this? She is only 17, with a whole lifetime ahead. People make mistakes. She can recover and do better. Why beat up on her?

And so what if Palin disapproves of birth control? The problem is not her disapproval, the problem is a stupid kid who did not listen to her mother. This is news in real life? A daughter who doesn;t listen, hooks up with jerk boyfren and gets pregnant? This is anything unusual? Sheee… How many liberals with “progressive” ideas have seen their kids take their “progressive” advice and still end up pregnant teens, or visitors to the locak; abortion clinic.

Furthermore, what do you know about Palin’s home life to pronounce a judgement of “child abuse” or “bad parenting”? The fact is that you know absolutely nothing. All you have is a knee-jerk reaction brought on by some news story. If the spotlight were turned on your personal life what would it dig up? Would you be able to stand scrutiny when your skeletons are exposed?

There is an element of irrationality in all these attacks against Palin based on her “pregnant daughter,” by people who don;t have the slightest clue about her personal family life. Spare us this BS. Such things happen in even “Christian” families.

  • @Janice,
Is the GOP, and Governor Palin, in particular, going to reach out to all unwed mothers that aren’t as fortunate as Bristol? If they don’t, they are truly hypocrites, you realize that, right?
If the GOP had taken a different tack on teenage pregnancy (as far as the “face” on it,) this would be less of a problem for the left wing.

  • About that airplane. Sarah flip flops. That old Alaskan plane is out. But the brand new one just arrived.

Tucson-based Global Aircraft Solutions Inc. on Thursday delivered Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s new campaign plane, an Embraer 190 regional jet complete with the Republican ticket’s campaign logo on the fuselage.

  • Robert du Rivage

The Republican Party is one species I woulld not mind seeing on the endangered list- at least until they realize that war is not about patriotism- it’s about obscene profits for the richest of the rich. Jerry!

  • To: ThePoliticalTruth

I’ve been out for the past few days. Didn’t see your post till now.

Anyway … No, I don’t live in a fantasy. But, I also don’t assume things about someone I know little about. The media apparently don’t need my help in that effort. Sounds as if they’re getting plenty from you, however.

What ever happened to “innocent until proven guilty?” You’d acknowledge that as a right to someone charged with a crime, but won’t extend it as a courtesy to someone who was voted into office by the people of Alaska (including her town) over a popular governor and who enjoys an 80% approval rating.

As for your comment about the town’s debt, see number 6 at this site: http://explorations.chasrmartin.com/2008/09/06/palin-rumors/

Are they in debt? Yes, and they’re paying it off early. Tells me they can afford it.

Aside from the debt, do you even know what the person who succeeded Sarah as mayor thinks of Sarah or what she’s done for Wasilla? Do you care?

Lastly, how do you know I’m not from Alaska?

  • Desire to secede from the United States? I hope you’re not getting this from the disproved lie that she was a member of the Alaska Independence Party. She’s been a registered Republican since she first registered to vote.

As for the accusation of dominionism in the comments, where could that possibly be coming from? There have been plenty of lies and misrepresentations of her positions, but this is the first I’ve ever heard of such a ridiculous notion.

Also, she’s not opposed to contraception, and she’s not opposed to schools teaching kids about contraception. Do some research, people. None of this stuff would ever have made it to a major news story if it had been Obama, and yet story after story has lie after lie about Palin, and people just believe it without checking anything. The equivalent level of story with Obama got sat on until disproved, and now it’s used to make laughingstocks of conservatives who spread it around. What’s that say about those spreading these lies, since they’re the same people who resisted the lies about Obama being a Muslim and so on?

  • Change you can trust, a slogan that could turn around McCain’s campaign?

Change you can trust contrasts beautifully with change you can believe in.

Everyone wants change, only with a team that we can trust to implement it.
If you’re in a tough spot, you want someone to come to help you that you can trust, not someone you believe may want to help you.

John McCain, polls show, is rated as highly qualified and highly trusted. This slogan, change you can trust, reinforces this message.

It can even be added on to John McCain’s current slogan. Country first, change you can trust. Or perhaps Change you can trust that puts Country first. Or how about Change you can trust that puts America first

It implies without directly saying it that the other side is perhaps a little less trustworthy.

It also reinforces the message that in a time we were facing battle with Al Qaeda worldwide and two conventional wars, John McCain is a commander in chief you can trust to lead us to victory.

There are 30 days left before Election Day. Sarah Palin’s debate performance was good, but it’s really up to John McCain to win.

    CHANGE You Can TRUST

CHANGE You Can TRUST to put COUNTRY FIRST

CHANGE You Can TRUST to put AMERICA FIRST

    CHANGE – TRUST
    COUNTRY FIRST

    John, are you listening???

    http://strategicthought-charles77.blogspot.com/2008/10/change-you-can-trust-slogan-that-could.html

  • Face it. This is one election where we just have to laugh–at everybody!

Which is why this YouTube video, “Presidential Shaving Cream,” based on the legendary novelty song by my late grandfather, Benny Bell, is the perfect antidote to our national frustration. I thought you might like to see it and pass it along to all the wonderful wonkettes. It’s gaining popularity.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cKsK5NbgrKo (or you can just type “Presidential Shaving Cream” into the YouTube search bar)

Maybe it will help keep us sane. Or maybe not. The bottom line is that they’re all full of it. Though we’d never actually say that.

    Enjoy.

    Sample:
“John McCain’s been around near forever,
    His integrity just doesn’t quit,
He is braver than all of his colleagues,
    But regrettably older than…
    Shaving cream,
    Be nice and clean,
    Shave every day and you’ll
    Always look keen.”

  • “This isn’t about Bristol Palin or Trig Palin or Earwax Palin or Mack Truck or whatever the hell the other ones are called. This is about the judgement, the beliefs and the managerial style of the woman who could be President of the United States.”

You are hilarious! I agree w/ you 100%. The way they paraded around her pregnant teen daughter and her “baby daddy” as something to applaud was mind-boggling to me. I’m thinking to myself, “How does that translate into ‘family values?’” Do I want my children or any of America’s children to watch this spectacle that contributes to the degradation of our culture? (no) And if she can’t successfully manage her own family, how the heck is she supposed to run the most complex, powerful country in the world as VP or President? No, not every teen girl has sex or gets pregnant. I somehow managed not to. It’s not a given. Parenting does matter.

Not all parents can be successful in their parenting, but you know what? Someone who is going to be VP & possibly President should be better and more successful than the rest of us. You want the most effective leaders who can carry out their goals and visions. We’re talking about the most powerful position in the entire world, after all. Don’t we vote based on who we think best represents our values?

And then she went on further to say that they applaud their daughter’s “choice” to have the baby. Huh? I was even more confused. I didn’t realize it should be a “choice,” according to Palin, even in cases of rape & incest.

I supported John McCain–went door-to-door canvassing, made phone calls, even blogged on his behalf. Then Palin came. I was floored. I even said back then that he gave away the election for so many reasons–her extreme right values, alienating moderates, throwing away the “experience” argument, insulting all women by choosing this unqualified nutter just because she’s a woman, her hypocrisy–the list goes on.

I alienated some friends who support John McCain b/c I didn’t fall in line and follow blindly. But as a moderate, how could I support such a hypocritical, far-right woman? In hindsight, it is hard for anyone to dispute that Palin has truly turned out to be a disaster. If McCain should win, it certainly wouldn’t be because of Palin, but in spite of Palin. The argument that he needed to appease the Republican base is ludicrous. They were going to vote against Obama, no matter how much they disliked John McCain. Sure, they thought McCain is too liberal, but he’s got nothing on Obama in that department.

That said, I am reminded of why I am so against Obama–his inexperience, his lies, and the many clues of his elitism. His website fails to mention his father was a Harvard grad who was some government big-wig in Kenya, & instead says he was a goat herder. While I loathe Palin as the VP choice, I still am not hot for Obama. He promised to take public financing until he realized he was raking in the $$$. Then he went back on his word. He has lied about many things, like his position on the gun issue. With him, it’s blind ambition–he will say whatever he thinks we want to hear. I am afraid that under Obama, much of America will be disappointed when we are no better off 4 years from now than we are at this moment.

The only good thing I see is that finally, those of us who don’t fit the blond-haired, blue-eyed American ideal can feel vindicated. As a kid, I found myself constantly trying to prove that I am an American because people didn’t think I looked like an “American,” whatever the f*ck an American is supposed to look like. I was constantly asked where I’m from–no matter that I was born here and spoke & wrote better English than the inquisitor.

I think I may just vote for a 3rd party candidate. The Republicans need to realize that the neo-con BS has always been part of a fringe group, and the Dems need to realize that most Americans don’t hold the same values that the liberal media and liberal Hollywood try to shove down our throats. We were so close with Ross Perot, then he had to drop out of the race, but already lost his ground when he decided to jump back in. He warned us about the “giant sucking sound of jobs” due to NAFTA, but no one listened. Remember, NAFTA came into law under Bill Clinton. Now we’ve got American cars & other big-ticket items being made in Mexico & Canada while American workers are out of jobs. The Dems are not our saviors. John McCain is the closest thing to an Independent we have now, but then he went and pulled the Palin thing. Oh well. We’ll see in a week.
